Past
Countless years before The Great Pyramid of Giza or Stonehenge was even an idea God, The King of Hell, and a woman named Sol held a meeting and wrote the covenant of heaven and hell. This covenant determined how the supernatural would act upon the realm of man--especially those species whom were not native to Earth. It stated that those whom broke the rules of conduct set-up by the covenant would be sent back to the respected realms and be dealt with by their own leaders. This was done to prevent history from repeating itself. See. long before this meeting or even before the birth of Sol the earth had been cast into eons of darkness. The sun had been taken from man as punishment of a crime they had committed.
Mankind found themselves underneath the mercy of beings called the Dark Ones. At first things were good between human and dark ones, but than man begun to worship the dark ones. They say power corrupt and the dark ones became proof of the truth behind this saying. They became crueler and crueler to humans. The race of man was not alone in their fight against their oppressors. Angels stood with them, but since Angels were children of the light they could not stand with man for extended period of time. This caused angels a great deal of grief, and so they asked God to find protectors for their charges whom were not weaken by the lack of sunlight. Their creator heeded their prayers and traveled to hell--the domain of demons. Here a deal was struck. Demons would take up the mantle of protector for mankind, and in exchange mankind would provide them with the things they needed.
Things were good for awhile, but than demons went from protector to tormentors. It seemed that all hope was lost until a human woman by the name of Sarah Jean climbed to the top of the tallest mountain and asked God to give them a tool they could use to help defeat their slavers. He was so moved by her plea that he returned the sun to the world. The return of the sun caused most of the dark ones to flee to another realm, but it had no affect upon demons. That was fine because the return of the sun, also, allowed Angels to come down into the realm man for indefinite amount of time. Yet, this did not turn the tides in the ways that was hope. It appeared that no matter what was thrown at them, demons kept the same hold over mankind as they did before the return of the sun.
God decided to turn the tide by creating Sol. Her purpose was to go around and punish those demons whom broke the original contract that was signed those many years ago. Everything was going well until a demon killed someone that Sol loved a great deal. Consumed with grief, Sol traveled the world killing demons regardless if they had committed a crime or not. Rumors begun to spread that she killed children and those with even the smallest ounce of demonic blood. Sol realizing what she had done was wrong called a meeting to write the covenant of heaven and hell. The covenant wasn't just to tell supernaturals how to act upon the realm, but to ensure that someone like Sol didn't go around punishing all members of a species for the crime of a few.
Many demons did not like the rules set up by the covenant. They did not believe Sol should decide what their conduct within the realm of man should be, and ignored these rules. Some, even, went as far as to deliberately break them. Demons, also, found around being banished to hell if they broke these rules. Some did this by possessions humans. Others did this by binding themselves to humans through various means. A numbers of humans were more than willing to go through these different rituals due to the powers they gained by binding themselves to demons in some forms. Alliances between men and demons formed, and over the course of time alliances went from just being between an individual person and a demon to being between an entire family of humans and a group of demons. These humans families became known for their use of black magic, and some gained control over this form of magic even without binding themselves to demons.
Demons became very eager to bind themselves to these families or even individuals. They found connecting themselves to these humans had great benefit to them. It increased their own power, and made it more difficult for them to be banished back into hell for even a short amount of time. The most infamous of these Black Magic Clan is the Devore. Their name is known by anyone whom had poked their head into the supernatural world for more than five minutes. They are regarded as the royal family of the dark magic clans. They are, also, the largest clan. They are made up of many families---some whom don't have the Devore name. A branch of the Devore clan can be found all over the world, but the main branch is located in New Orleans.
It might not come as a surprise to anyone that the Devore have a strong French heritage. In fact, they were one of the first families whom decided to come settle inside the new world when France first decided to colonize it. They had already establish themselves within the supernatural world as the great black magic family by this time. They had established themselves as this long before the discovery of the new world. It was because of this immense power that caused two faction of demons to fight over an alliance with the Devore clan. Both factions wished to gain control over the ruler-ship of hell, and both were equal in power. They believed whomever gained the alliance with Devore clan would, also, gain control over hell.
The Devore clan eventually picked a faction to align themselves with. The faction they aligned themselves with was lead by a demon named Deamiel, whom many mortals believe is Lucifer due to the fact they are unaware that hell is actually co-ruled by two beings. This alliance only furthered cemented their position within the supernatural world, and the years only increased their reputation until they found themselves within modern time. It was here that Jared entered the world. He was born to Mason Devore--head of the Devore clan--and Nicolette Lemaire--the oldest daughter of a smaller clan. Jared's mother had been betrothed to his father since her birth. Their betrothal was done to form an alliance between the Lemaire clan and the Devore clan. In fact, the alliance was to bring the Lemaire underneath the Devore's control.
Shortly after his birth, Jared was bound to a demon. The ritual that his parents had performed upon him was known as the child ritual. It gave the child access to the demon's powers in ways that no other rituals came close to matching, and it gave the demon involved in this ritual an opening into the realm of man that could not be closed. It, also, made the demon extremely protective of the human they are bound with. The demons regard the humans they are bond with as their child--thus the name of the ritual. The ritual had to be done before the child's tenth birthday or it would result in the human's death. A fact that caused most to decide to have this ritual done just after birth. Also, for some reason females tended to be killed by this ritual. It was for this reason that the ritual was banned from being performed upon a female child.
As soon as Jared's parents learned that Nicolette was going to give birth to a male child they begun to search for a demon to bind their son with. Many demons flocked towards them for the honor, and they eventually settled upon one. He was a powerful demon. One whom would make a great demon to be bound to the future leader of the Devore clan. However, as soon as Jared was laid into the middle of the ritual circle another demon appeared and demanded for him to be the one bound to Jared instead. If the other demon made a great match for the future leader of the Devore clan than this one would have been perfect, or close to perfect. The demon that appeared was the fourth lord of hell. It is said that he could climb higher if he wished. Some claim if he wished to be king of hell he could be.
Whatever the truth he had no interest in going though with a binding ritual. He had no need to. There were some demons too powerful to be sent back into hell, and he was one such demon. However, as soon as Jared was laid out into the middle of the circle he knew whom he was. He was the incarnation of a great and powerful warlord named Khellendros. A man whom almost succeeded in conquering the world. More than that he was someone that the fourth lord of hell cared a great deal about. It wouldn't have mattered to his parents what his reason for wishing to be bound to their child. They knew it would have been foolish to deny someone of this position, and so they agreed. His father told the demon that Jared was originally going to be bound to that he would bond him to his next born son. The ritual was than completed.
Those within the clan thought that Jared's parents were the perfect match. They believed that nothing would tear them apart because at the end of the day Mason only truly ever had eyes for Nicolette. Their belief was shattered the day Mason met a young woman from the north. There was something about this woman that drew him, and he decided to divorce Nicolette in favor of marrying this female. A decision that many people didn't agree with. Some didn't agree with it because this woman was an outsider. She knew nothing of their society or their custom. They believed that she wouldn't like it and that she would try to change the foundation of whom they were. Others didn't like it because they believe it was suppose to be Mason and Nicolette until the end of time. They even convince Nicolette to consider this new woman the enemy.
An opinion that Jared's mother didn't share for long, because no matter how horrid others tried to paint her Nicolette couldn't hate someone whom was kind to her son. The northern was more than kind to Jared. She acted almost like a second mother to him. They became great friends. The two were often found together, and when the northern became pregnant with Jared's brother it was Nicolette she wanted in the birthing chamber with her. She ended up giving birth to a baby boy whom she named Kenneth, but everyone ended up calling him Kenny. Mostly because Jared had a hard time pronouncing his younger brother's name. True to his words, Jared's father ended up binding his brother to the demon that was originally suppose to be bound to Jared. Kenny's mother was not happy with this decision and tried to end it, but any attempt she made was stopped.
Some time passed than Mason was approached by Deamiel. He wished to take possession of Mason, sleep with his wife, get her pregnant and have her give birth to his child. It was a request that Mason thought he would be foolish to deny, and so he agreed to it. However, his wife did not give birth to a son like he expected. Instead she gave birth to a daughter, whom they named Cerenda. It was around this time that Cerenda and Kenny's mother decided that she no longer wanted to be apart of Mason's world. It might have been a desire that existed within her for awhile, but the birth of her daughter made it too strong to ignore. She witness Mason's upbringing of his son. He was a firm father. A man whom believed if you spared the rod you spoiled the child. More than that she knew how women were raised within this world. She did not wish for her daughter to be brought up this way.
So, she decided to take her children and leave. More than that she convinced Nicolette to do the same with Jared. The northern shared with Nicolette stories of her world, and Nicolette decided that she wished for her son to be raised that way. They wanting their children to grow-up together bought a house north east. They lived there for two years, but than Mason found them. He was outraged. He killed Nicolette. The act was done right in front of Jared. However, Kenny and Cerenda's mother was spared the same fate. Some claimed that it was because he really loved her. Other claimed that because she was an outsider that he was more forgiving of her betrayal. Mason dragged his family back to New Orleans, and they lived together for a short time. Well, long enough for Mason's anger over the entire incident to die down.
The northern decided to leave, but unlike before she didn't try to keep her location hidden from Mason. She believed that if he knew where his children were located and were able to see them that he would have no reason to become outraged. It was a decision that seemed to work. He did try to convince her to return to him, but to no avail. However, her decision to leave didn't just affect Mason it affected Jared as well. He had just lost one mother and her decision to leave felt like he was losing another. It didn't matter if the northern came to see Jared or tried to spend time with him. He was inconsolable. He, however, never took his anger out on his siblings. He went to see them every chance he had.
Sixteen years after coming into the world Kenny left it. He did not posses the raw power of Cerenda or the natural talent of Jared. He tried anything and everything to impress his father--to make him proud of him. However, nothing he tried gave him the desired result until he literally crashed and burn. This was the finally straw for the northern. She blamed Mason for her son's death. Claiming that if he hadn't pushed Kenny so hard that he would still be alive. She fled, but didn't make it far before being killed in a car accident. There are those that claim that she is very much alive, but made it appear that she died inside a car accident to keep Mason from looking for her and that she fled to someplace that Mason would never visit--England.
Whether the truth, Cerenda was lost both her brother and mother within a short period. Many believed that she would come to live with her father, but she refused. Instead, she choose to stay with her step father and his daughter. Cerenda became the black sheep of the family. Some believe that it was her brother's death that made her decide to reject the Devore way. Other claim that she was too much her mother's daughter not to reject it eventually. Whatever the case, she decided that she wanted nothing more to do with the Devore clan, and the only members of the family she has anything to do with is Jared and his demon. The latter she only deals with because of his connection to her brother. Many people look towards Jared to bring Cerenda back into the fold of the family.
Present
The years have passed, and Jared is no closer to convincing his sister to return to the family than he had been when she first decided to disown them all. Instead, she decided to become a demon hunter. Their father sees this decision as her way of spitting even more onto their family belief and custom--to show how disconnected she is from their way. Jared doesn't believe that is the case. While he does wish for his sister to come back to the family. He doesn't believe that she hunts demons as another way to stick it to them. He believes that she does it because she has a heart of gold and wishes to protect others from those things that go bump in the night.
Mason have been giving Jared more responsibility over the clan. He is preparing him for the day when he takes over the clan. The day that Jared will take his father's title of head of the Devore clan will not depend upon Mason's death. The date was picked when Mason named Jared his heir. The date is schedule for his thirtieth birthday. His father believes that this is plenty of time for him to learn the ins and out of running the clan. He didn't make it so his death was needed to make Jared clan head for several reason. The first was he was far older than he appeared. Mason had been alive for centuries. The child ritual that every male child endured didn't just grant them more power, but an extremely long life span. They physically stopped aging at their thirtieth birthday. He was not going to die of natural causes.
A second reason was he believe that if he waited for his death that he'll keep pushing Jared's training off, and if he did actually die than his son would not be prepared. While he believe that his son would rise to the occasion he did not want to risk being wrong. It was why over the last couple years he been allowing his son to have more responsibilities over the clan. He hopes that by watching how his son rules that he can stir him towards a more proper way if his ruling is not satisfactory.
